Mistral's speech-to-text model, designed for continuous processing: the text appears during dictation rather than only after the recording, and in the FLEURS comparison the word error rate sits below that of the widely used reference model - language coverage is narrower in exchange. Because the weights are open, the model needs no transmission to a model vendor: in dedicated operation on reserved hardware in a German data centre the chain is closed, and the party bound there is the data centre operator via the chain obligation under section 203(4) of the German Criminal Code. When running on your own hardware on your own premises the disclosure question under section 203 does not arise at all.
Everything section 203 requires is settled, including the provider's confidentiality undertaking. You do not have to clarify anything further.
What it is good for
- More accurate than Whisper in the FLEURS comparison - 5.9 instead of 7.4 percent word error rate
- Genuine streaming processing: text appears during dictation, not afterwards
- Apache 2.0 and a vendor with its seat and data centres in the EU
Where it stops
- 13 languages - not enough coverage for multilingual matters involving rarer languages
- Only available since February 2026, and correspondingly less field experience than Whisper
- Does not detect speaker changes by itself
