Cohere Rerank
A rerank model reorders the hits of a search: it scores every passage found against the original question and lifts the pertinent ones to the top. In file search this model from Cohere sits behind the embedding step and before the language model, shortening the text the latter has to read. Because it sees the file passages in plain text while doing so, the professional-secrecy assessment is no smaller than for a generative model - via Azure it is answered: the model is sold and operated by the platform itself and therefore falls under the confidentiality line signed there. On this route the chain under section 203 of the German Criminal Code is closed.
Everything section 203 requires is settled, including the provider's confidentiality undertaking. You do not have to clarify anything further.
What it is good for
- Lifts the pertinent passages of a file search to the top and thereby shortens the context for the downstream language model
- Two tiers (pro and fast) evidenced in the EU
- Sold and operated by the platform itself - the same contractual line as the other models sold by Azure
Where it stops
- Produces no answers, only a ranking - without a language model before and after it there is no usable result
- Scores the hit passages in plain text: the route assessment is the same as for a generative model
- Abuse monitoring is active by default; switching it off depends on a vendor approval that cannot be booked directly
Routes examined
The same model, procured differently, is a different legal position. What is examined per route is the contract chain, not the model.
