Webflow websites hit hard limits once enterprise requirements arrive

Webflow is excellent for prototypes, landing pages and startups with three to five people. Beyond a certain point, however, the platform becomes a problem: no enterprise-grade multilingual support, no fine-grained permission management, no custom backend workflows, no on-premises option, and hosting only on the infrastructure of Webflow, a US provider that documents no option to keep data in the EU. For companies that want EU hosting for data protection reasons (after Schrems II, US transfers have relied since 2023 on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, which is still being challenged before the CJEU), manage several hundred pages and need a CMS with editorial workflows, TYPO3 is the logical next step. Gosign migrates Webflow websites to TYPO3: the existing design (HTML/CSS) is converted into Fluid templates, the content is transferred in structured form, and TYPO3 extensions add the functionality that is missing.

Growing companies, regulated industries and international rollouts drive the move

The most common scenario is a fast-growing startup whose Webflow site no longer scales. With 20 employees and a website in one language, Webflow works. With 200 employees, five languages and a blog with 500 articles, it no longer does. Webflow’s pricing structure does not scale either: CMS plans are capped at 10,000 items, custom code is limited, and API access is throttled. Moving to TYPO3 gives the company full control over hosting, performance and extensibility.

A second scenario is regulated industries. A financial services provider has built its marketing website on Webflow, but its compliance department requires EU hosting, audit logs for content changes and a four-eyes approval workflow for every page. Webflow offers none of these natively. TYPO3 does: Workspaces for staging and approval, EXT:belog for audit logs, and hosting on a server in Frankfurt.

Third scenario: an international rollout. An industrial company runs its main website on Webflow in English. Now country websites in 12 languages are planned. Webflow Localization is expensive and limited. TYPO3 offers native multi-site and multilingual support, in which each language can have its own page structure, including local content that does not exist in every language.

The migration converts the Webflow export into TYPO3 Fluid templates

The migration follows a defined process: export the Webflow project as HTML/CSS/JS, analyze the page structure and the interactions in use, convert the HTML into Fluid templates, and import the content into TYPO3 content elements. The Webflow export delivers clean, semantic HTML that translates well into Fluid. The CSS is carried over as a Sass/SCSS file or rewritten into Tailwind utility classes, depending on the TYPO3 setup.

Webflow interactions (scroll animations, hover effects, modals) now run on GSAP, the JavaScript animation library that Webflow acquired in 2024. Carrying them over one-to-one is not possible. Instead, the interactions are rebuilt with native CSS (transitions, animations) or lightweight JavaScript (IntersectionObserver, the dialog element). In most cases, this cuts the JavaScript payload from 200-300 KB (Webflow runtime) to under 20 KB.

The content import runs through the Webflow API or the HTML export. Each Webflow Collection is mapped to a TYPO3 content element or an Extbase record. Blog articles are imported into tx_news, team members into custom records and testimonials into the existing TYPO3 data structure.

The hard parts are Webflow-specific features and URL redirects

The biggest migration problem is Webflow features without a TYPO3 equivalent. Webflow Forms run on a built-in form handler; in TYPO3, a form system (powermail, Form Framework) has to be configured. Webflow E-commerce runs on the platform itself; in TYPO3, a shop system (TYPO3-native or a Shopware/Magento integration) has to be set up. These functional gaps must be identified before the migration and planned into the TYPO3 project.

Second problem: URL redirects. Webflow URLs follow their own scheme. After the migration, every old URL has to redirect to its new TYPO3 URL, so that Google does not index the pages as 404s and existing backlinks keep their value. For 200 pages, that means 200 redirects, configured in the TYPO3 redirects table or via .htaccess.

Third issue: design differences. Webflow produces standard HTML and CSS, which the browser renders like any other page. A layout that looks pixel-perfect in Webflow can still render slightly differently in TYPO3, because Webflow’s base stylesheets (webflow.css, normalize.css) are missing or the CSS reset and the font loading differ. A visual QA pass after the migration is therefore mandatory.

The migration is not an upgrade but a platform change

There is no automated migration path from Webflow to TYPO3. Every migration is a project with analysis, conversion, import and QA. The duration depends on complexity: a simple website with 20 pages and a blog can be migrated in two to three weeks. A complex website with 500 pages, e-commerce and five languages takes two to three months. Gosign has carried out Webflow migrations for companies with 50 to 2,000 pages and relies on AI-assisted template conversion, which generates the Fluid code from the Webflow HTML and keeps manual adjustments to a minimum.
