Mistral Small
Vendor version: mistral-small-2603 (as of 29 August 2026)
The compact, low-latency tier from the European vendor Mistral, cut for work in series: pulling mandatory details from incoming receipts, preparing standard correspondence, pre-sorting documents of the same kind. For professional secrets the contractual chain is closed on three routes at once: in dedicated operation on reserved hardware in a German data centre, via the Open Telekom Cloud, whose signed confidentiality agreement under section 203 of the German Criminal Code expressly covers the AI Foundation Services, and via Google Vertex AI with a service-bound agreement. Via IONOS, by contrast, the product-specific confirmation of the confidentiality clause is still outstanding.
Everything section 203 requires is settled, including the provider's confidentiality undertaking. You do not have to clarify anything further.
What it is good for
- Compact, low-latency model for extraction and correspondence drafts
- European model vendor with open weights
- Available managed from German data centres with a section 203 artefact
Where it stops
- Compact model class - for complex pleading and analysis work larger models are the better choice
- Citations and references always have to be verified professionally
- The platform's global endpoint gives no residency guarantee - the same models can be called there as well. Binding to the EU is therefore a configuration requirement: the global endpoint is blocked by organisational policy, otherwise the EU commitment is a settings question rather than a property.
Routes examined
The same model, procured differently, is a different legal position. What is examined per route is the contract chain, not the model.
| Route | Section 203 status | Version on this route |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated instance in Germany, operated by Gosign | covered | - |
| IONOS AI Model Hub (German data centres) | conditional | - |
| German data centres through the Gosign chain | covered | - |
| Google EU platform (Gemini Enterprise, formerly Vertex AI) | covered | - |
The conditions behind a conditional status - which piece is open on which route and who closes it - are set out in the full matrix in the German catalogue, and we go through them in the conversation. The German page for Mistral Small carries the sources with their retrieval dates.
